An Aristocrat’s Advice

When the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam)was asked which woman was best he replied, "The one who pleases (her husband) when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives a command, and does not go against his wishes regarding her person or property by doing anything of which he disapproves." [Nasai in Shu'ab al-Iman]

“Awf ibn Muhallim al-Shaybani one of the most highly respected leaders of the Arab nobility during Jahiliyyah married his daughter Umm Iyas to al-Harith ibn Amr al-Kindi. As she was being prepared to be taken to the groom her mother, Umamah, came to advise her and said:
‘O my daughter, if it were deemed unnecessary to give you this advice because of good manners and noble descent, then it would have been unnecessary for you, because you posses these qualities, but it will serve as a reminder to those who are forgetful, and will help those who are wise.

‘O my daughter, if a woman were able to do without a husband by virtue of her father’s wealth and her need for her father, then you of all people would be most able to do without a husband, but women were created for men just as men were created for them.

‘O my daughter, you are about to leave the home in which you grew up, where you first learned to walk, to go to a place you do not know, to a companion to whom you are unfamiliar. By marrying you, he has become a master over you, so be like a servant to him, and he will become like a servant to you.

‘Take from me ten qualities, which will be a provision and a reminder for you.

‘The first and second of them are: be content in his company, and listen to and obey him, for contentment brings peace of mind, and listening to and obeying one’s husband pleases Allah.

‘The third and fourth of them are: make sure that you smell good and look good; he should not see anything ugly in you, and he should not smell anything but a pleasant smell from you. Kohl is the best kind of beautification to be found, and water is better than the rarest perfume.

‘The fifth and sixth of them are: prepare his food on time, and keep quiet when he is asleep, for raging hunger is like a burning flame, and disturbing his sleep will make him angry.

‘The seventh and eight of them are: take care of his servants and children, and take care of his wealth, for taking care of his wealth shows that you appreciate him, and taking care of his children and servants shows good management.

‘The ninth and tenth of them are: never disclose any of his secrets, and never disobey any of his orders, for if you disclose any of his secrets you will never feel safe from his possible betrayal, and if you disobey him, his heart will be filled with hatred towards you.

‘Be careful, O my daughter, of showing joy in front of him when he is upset, and do not show sorrow in front of him when he is happy, because the former shows a lack of judgment whilst the latter will make him unhappy.

‘Show him as much honour and respect as you can, and agree with him as much as you can, so that he will enjoy your companionship and conversation.

‘Know, O my daughter, that you will not achieve what you would like to until you put his pleasure before your own, and his wishes before yours, in whatever you like and dislike. And may Allah choose what is best for you and protect you.’” [Jamharah Khutah al-Arab, 1/145]

Happiness in Islam is based on patience (Sabr) and gratitude (Shukr)

Alhamdulillah,I started this project with a vague intention of understanding the psychological source if happiness from an Islamic perspective. Having understood the non-Islamic perspective and the Islamic perspective, I have reached a point where for me, the source of happiness is obvious. What is important is that we can learn to become happy and we can learn to become unhappy. Insha Allah, our efforts with the Productive Teens project will see whether we can go from a theoretical discussion to a successful action research. In the meantime, everything that I have been working for over the last three years is summarized in this hadith

Are You Getting Enough Fiber in Your Diet?

Fiber is an essential part of a healthy diet and vital for your body to function properly. fiber helps the digestive system to process food and absorb nutrients. However, it is not something the body can absorb - this means that it is not a nutrient and contains no vitamins.

Fiber is obtained from plant-based foods. There are two types of fiber: insoluble and soluble.

Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber contains the compounds cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. These help the bowel to pass food by making stools soft and bulky. This type of fiber helps prevent constipation.

Insoluble fiber is found in the following foods:

    beans
    brown rice
    fruits with edible seeds
    lentils
    maize
    oats
    pulses
wholegrains, including bread, cereals and flour

Soluble fiber
Soluble fiber contains gums and pectin. This type of fiber controls blood sugar. It can be found in all fruit and vegetables, but the following are rich sources:

    apples
    barley
    citrus
    legumes
    oats
    pears
    strawberries

Soluble fiber slows down the rate at which glucose is absorbed from food in the bloodstream. This gives the body more time to process carbohydrates, leading to lower blood sugar levels and better carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore adequate amounts of fiber in the diet will help to control blood sugar levels and avoid surges of sugar or insulin.

A high-fiber diet is one of the best ways to avoid putting weight on. It is thought that fiber can support weight loss in the following ways:

Fiber adds bulk to a meal making it more satisfying and filling
Fiber slows down the digestive process and thus delays hunger for longer, making the body consume fewer calories
Fiber can prevent food cravings because it slows the absorption of glucose, which helps to regulate blood sugar levels
Fiber is not absorbed by the body so less of the calories consumed will be absorbed by the body

Wheat bran is one of the least effective forms of fiber and can prevent absorption of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The fiber present in oats, vegetables, fruit, lentils and other pulses is much more effective and kinder to your gut.

Opposing Oppression & being politically active or Purifying yourself from sin and becoming closer to Allah?

By:
Sajid Iqbal

Today we have some Muslims who believe the role of Muslims is only to oppose and speak out against oppression by being politically active. They oppose and ridicule Muslims who don't do this. They despise Muslims who just want to focus on being better Muslims by purifying themselves from sin and evil. They ridicule Muslims who focus on just worship like prayer, zikr and religious rituals.

We also have some Muslims who believe the role of Muslims is only to become better Muslims by becoming closer to God and purifying themselves from sin and evil. They focus on prayer, remembrance of God, increasing their knowledge about Islam. They don't believe in politics. They don't believe or promote the idea of being politically active, to speak out against oppression and persecution, to defend the Deen from Islamophobia and speak out against occupation and attacks against the Ummah.

Both are following Islam selectively. They are not following the teachings and practise of the Prophet (pbuh) completely. If they did they would know that the role of the Muslims is to do BOTH:
1) Speaking out against oppression, persecution, occupation and being politically active to defend the deen is COMPULSORY.
2) Becoming a better Muslim, a practising Muslim, praying, acts of worship, purifying yourself from sin, increasing knowledge of the Deen and being a walking, talking advert for Islam is also COMPULSORY.
**IT'S NOT ABOUT ONE OR THE OTHER. IT'S COMPULSORY TO DO BOTH**

The Prophet (pbuh) opposed and spoke out against oppression and all forms of occupation and attacks against the Deen. Remember Badr, Uhud, treaty of Hudaybia, Misaak-e-Madinah, uniting the ummah, defending the weak and fighting for the rights of the oppressed- this was our Prophet. He was politically active not passive.
The same Prophet (pbuh) asked for forgiveness all night, he worshipped all night, he promoted perfecting ones character, he promoted one to become closer to their creator, he promoted us to learn and study the deen.

SO DON'T CHOOSE TO BE POLITICALLY ACTIVE OR TO PRAYER. DON'T CHOOSE TO OPPOSE OPPRESSION OR TO PURIFY YOURSELF FROM SIN. DON'T CHOOSE TO DEFEND THE UMMAH FROM OCCUPATION AND PERSECUTION OR TO INCREASE YOUR KNOWLDEGE OF THE DEEN.

***THE PROPHET (PBUH) DID BOTH AND TAUGHT HIS SAHABAH AND UMMAH TO DO THE SAME.***

Thirukural displayed in France railways

Here is a photo of Thirukural couplet  displayed in French in a train in France. It also mentions Thiruvalluvar's name .We  know Thirukural Tamil couplets are displayed in the Tamil Nadu state buses. Now a French Translation of the couplet is found in a train in France .This is yet another honour for Tamil. The following is the original Tamil couplet that is translated to French and displayed in the train .

 மாதர் முகம்போல் ஒளிவிட வல்லையேல்
  காதலை வாழி மதி

The English translation for the above Kural by Sudhananda Bharati is as follows

Like my lady's face if you shine
All my love to you; hail O moon!

I don't know how far the French translation is correct. Many people have translated Thirukural in to English and most of the major languages in the world and many Indian languages. It is still being translated by many in to many languages. Thirukural is not a sacred text like Bible, Quran , Baghavad Gita ,Ramayan or the Chinese  classic Tao Te Ching. Thirukural is a masterpiece work on human thoughts. It is an eternal epic by Thiruvalluar. It is an universal moral code. All his couplets are words of profound wisdom, noble thoughts and great moral lessons. All his couplets are wisecracks with a mystic note. His work is known as 'poyya mozhi " in Tamil ,which means "The book that never lies" . This explains why Thirukural is the most translated non religious text in the world.

Greats like Sri Aurbindo, Rev.G.U.Pope, Yogi Sudhananda  Bharati and P.S.Sundaram have translated Thirukural in to English. But it must be admitted that none of the translations are close to the original in Tamil. It is because of Thiruvalluvar's mastery and command over Tamil. Another reason could be the rich vocabulary of Tamil. Thiruvalluvar's style is also inimitable. Although we call kural as couplet, the original Tamil verse doesn't  have even two lines. It is just one and three fourth lines in each verse. Translating Thirukural in to any language will be a challenging task. Because each couplet is a short pithy statement. The fact is, no translation can do justice to the poetic brevity of Thiruvalluvar. It is brief ,terse ,rhymed and fleeting. All the translators have succeeded in translating the gist of each couplet. But the charm in the original Tamil couplet is lost. Look at the English translation of the Tamil original couplet .

. துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத்
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை.

The rain begets the food we eat
And forms a food and drink concrete.

But P.S.Sundaram has attempted to follow Valluvar's style in translation of some of the couplets in English. Few samples are given below.

பற்றுக பற்றற்றான் பற்றினை யப்பற்றைப்

பற்றுக பற்று விடற்கு

Cling to the One who clings to nothing
And so clinging cease to cling

கற்றாருட் கற்றா ரெனப்படுவர் கற்றார்முற்

கற்ற செலச்செல்லு வார்

Most learned among the learned is he
Whose learning the learned accept

Wherever possible P.S.Sundaram has attempted Valluvar's style of  repetitive rhymic syllables, which is reasonably close to the original. But he could not do this for the entire translation. Many scholars are still translating Kural in to many world languages and Indian languages. So far Thirukural has been translated in to French, Latin, Polish, Russian, Swedish, German, Japanese, Dutch, Czech Finnish, Malayan, Burmese, Korean, Chinese, Sinhalese, Italian, Urdu, Fiji, Arabic, Norwegian Spanish, Hungarian, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Oriya, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi Rajasthan,i Sanskrit, Saurashtra and Telugu .It needs to be translated to all languages in the world, however fallible the translation could be ,because these couplets guide people from a spiritual perspective over a wide range of topics, on the virtues of life, materialistic life and pleasures of life. The Tamil posterity can indeed feel proud about their rich cultural heritage.
