Do African Traditions Promulgate Forced Marriages?

The role of tribes and families is important in African traditions of marriage. Most of the marriages are arranged by the families of the marrying partners. The women are considered valuable so much so that the husbands are traditionally bound to give some gift to the family of the bride.

The noble and well to do families consider it honorable to have arranged marriages of their children. The marriage bond is so strong in African traditions of marriage that even the children out of the wedlock are considered more akin to the families than the marriage partners. The tradition has cemented the communities to have good partners for their children.

Paradoxically, the poor families permit their children to select their life partners. Even the marriage partners try their best to select their spouses on their likings and disliking. They don’t allow their families to involve unnecessarily in the process of marriage.

Why this paradox…?

In my opinion, the children from the rich and noble families have to depend upon their parents for a long time until they establish their own recognition. However, children from the poor families have to struggle from the very young age. They rarely have to depend upon their families for a long time. They have to strive for their survival which makes them free from the problem of recognition in their own community groups.

The African traditions of marriage are a collection of diversified customs and events. The influence of Islam, Christianity and Western society is evident. But the African people still try to adhere to their traditions wholeheartedly. They consider it a prestige to pay homage to their centuries old culture. The Western critics see these traditions through their own cultures. They allege that most of the marriages in African society are forced one. They also criticize the maintenance of virginity before marriage. They don’t recognize that in most of the situations the marrying partners prefer to depend upon their families to make a right decision of life. There is no guarantee that their families shall always make a right decision but it is truer in the case of independent marriages.

They see offering of the gift to the family of bride as payment of price of the woman. They describe the situation as people are bidding for a wife and the highest bidder is awarded the trophy. They think that such kind of marriages are not only uncivilized but also cause infliction of torture on the poor women.

You may like to agree that arranged marriages are still a fashion in the big part of the world. Even in Asia the arranged marriages are highly esteemed. Even those who develop an affair get involve their families to the extent that their marriages seem arranged.

In African traditions of marriage, many ancient customs have been fashioned to different influences like Islam, Christianity and Western society. Many of the Muslim sects don’t allow forced marriages. All out jurisprudence of Islam proves that no valid marriage can take place without independent consent of the marriage partners.

In African tradition of family, the women are supposed to support their families and bring honor to their name. Arranged marriages are considered a fashion of honor. Similarly, the sexual relations before marriage are strongly rejected by the society. Most of the noble families consider that the women should follow a specific order in sexual relations and birth of a child.
There are claims on internet that African girls have started to act otherwise under the western influences. The visitors from Africa should contribute on this point. As far as I know from my Asian background, the protection of virginity is considered a part of the moral character. The Muslim background does not permit any kind of extra-marital relationships. It is not only considered a sin but also an offense in the Muslim jurisprudence.

The offence may be punished in Islam severely. Quran allows such fornicators to marry each other if they like.

African traditions of Lamu tribe require the girls to remain virgin before wedlock. They want their women not only to be helpful, loyal but also honorable to their families.

Get Married

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Get married, reproduce, and let your number increase.” [sunan Ibn Majah]

Islam stresses the importance of the institution of marriage and the desirability of having children and taking good care of all members of the family unit. Healthy societies are built on healthy families. Remaining single, having relationships without marriage, or neglecting one’s family, are looked down upon and contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Whoever desires to gain Allah’s Pleasure and win his/her everlasting abode in Paradise needs to take care of the responsibilities that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) wants us to shoulder on earth and which (anyway) satisfy the demands of human nature. Marriage should be looked forward to as a way to earn good deeds and the most responsible and fitting way in which to satisfy the cravings of human nature.

Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) mentions as one of His favours on us: “And Allah has made for you mates of your own nature; and made for you, out of them, children and grandchildren; and provided for you sustenance of the best. [Quran: Surah 16, Ayat 72]

HUSBAND AND WIFE RELATIONSHIP – WHY THEY END UP IN DIVORCE?

by mthago

Marriage is a contract that binds a man known as a husband and a woman known as a wife. There is a set of responsibilities each imposed on both sides. As long as these responsibilities are fulfilled by husband and wife, the marriage will be orderly and intact. So as to be able to fulfill their respective responsibilities, husband and wife must have ‘iman’. Without ‘iman’ a person will not be able to fulfill the responsibilities as a wife and husband and the marriage contract will end in divorce. They end up in divorce because they want to solve their problems. In reality, divorce does not solve problems because the core of the problems arises from the fact that both sides do not want to obey the orders of Allah. As long as both sides continue to disobey the orders of Allah, even after they are divorced, they will continue to have problems. Many couples end up in divorces but after the divorce they end up in more problems. Divorce does not solve their problems, but divorce will lead them to more problems when they continue to disobey the orders of Allah. Whenever we disobey the orders of Allah, we will have problems and the more we disobey the orders of Allah, the more problems we will have. If we do not want problems, we should obey the orders of Allah. But why do people disobey the orders of Allah? People disobey the orders of Allah because they do not have the greatness of Allah in their heart and in their mind. Why do we not have the greatness of Allah in our mind and heart? It is because the greatness of Allah is not in our daily speeches. What we have in our heart and mind is the greatness of this world as the talk of the greatness of this world is always in our speeches. We will only obey the orders of Allah if we can foresee some worldly benefits. When we have marital problems, we should not think that only divorce can solve them. Divorce does not solve our problems at all and we should not even consider that option. Our marriage problems will only be solved by Allah and Allah will solve our problems when both of us turn to the obedience of the orders of Allah. In order to obey the orders of Allah both sides needs ‘iman’.
Why many marriages end up in divorce? Once we know the reasons, we may probably know the solution to prevent more occurrences of divorce among Muslim couples. As love is the common attribute that binds a woman and a man in marriage, hatred is the common attribute that makes a man and a woman to break off and a married couple to end up in divorce. Hatred is caused by the penchant to look at the bad side of someone, while love is caused by the inclination to look at the good side of someone. Husband and wife are two individuals who come into constant contact with each other. Before we become husband and wife, we are in love with each other. During that time we hardly had the time to meet each other and when we have the opportunity to meet, we have only time to observe the good side of each other. During courtship, we only observe the good side of our partner, and we will always talk about the positive side of our relationship. However once we become husband and wife, we start to observe the bad sides of each other as well, and our talks involve the negative sides of our relationship. When we are in the habit of observing the bad sides of our partner, we are in fact nurturing hatred between each other. Hatred stimulates stress and unhappiness in us. We have to know that no one is born in this world with perfection. Everyone in this world has weaknesses. When men make mistakes and ask for forgiveness from Allah, Allah loves the action very much. Allah makes men to have weaknesses, and when men make mistakes Allah want them to ask forgiveness from Allah. Allah loves the actions of men who, when they make mistakes, they ask forgiveness from Allah. If we do not like the bad qualities of our partner, we can never find anyone to replace him or her in the world without any bad qualities. Our husbands and our wives are the means Allah use to test us. Allah has made us to marry him or her, and with the grace of Allah we become husband and wife. What Allah ordered us to do is to look at the good qualities of our partners and to nurture love of each other. When we accidentally observe the bad qualities of our partner, Allah ordered us to do something so that the bad qualities of our partner are removed from him or her. We can choose either to do it by using the power of actions or by using the power of talking or at the very least by using the power of our heart. Using the power of our heart means that we are using the power of our ‘‘doa’’ or prayers so that the bad qualities of our partner will be removed by Allah. In my opinion, since nowadays most of us have weak ‘iman’, using the power of our prayers or ‘doa’ is the most recommended method.

Even though both of us have weaknesses but we have to live with the weaknesses of each other and we should continue to live as husband and wife and to exercise patience in all situations. What it means to exercise patience at all time? We have to continue to do good to our partner and to continue making ‘doa’ or prayers so that all the weaknesses in our partners are removed by Allah. We should solve our marital problems by resorting to the obedience to Allah’s orders. We should neither quarrel nor physically or mentally abuse our partners. We should continue to do good to each other’s or at least to remain silent. We should resolve our problems at all time by using prayers or ‘doa’ and be patient. We should remember that there is no one who is able to solve our problems except Allah. Allah will solve our marital problems only through good deeds and prayers, and not through disobedience to the orders of Allah. Divorce is not the solution to our problems but instead serves as a means for us to evade our problems. Ideally we should face off our problems and not run away from them. We should remember that problems are befallen us because of our bad deeds. Allah gives us problems because we have disobeyed the orders of Allah. Allah will solve our problems when we obey the orders of Allah. Our main mistake is we think that we can solve problems by ourselves. We must know that we cannot solve our problems by our own ways. We must have faith that there is no one who can help solve our problems except Allah. Allah will solve our problems when we obey His orders with the intention of only to please Him until He is pleased.

We must strive to easily forgive and forget everything bad that had happen to us in the past. We must also have the humility of asking for forgiveness from our partner, whether when we make mistakes or not. Either way, we will not lose anything by asking for forgiveness from our partner. When we make mistakes and ask for forgiveness from our partner, Allah will elevate our position. If we want to resolve our problems by having divorce and to try to find someone who is perfect in the world, we will never find one. There is no woman or man in the world who has no weaknesses. We have to live with each other’s weaknesses and with patience and at the same time we have to continue making prayers or ‘doa’ to Allah with the intention to please Allah, so that Allah will remove or minimise each other’s weaknesses. Divorce is not the means to solve our problems, but obedience to the orders of Allah is. In order to be always in the obedience to the orders of Allah, we need ‘iman’. Our ‘iman’ will increase when we do the work of the Prophet S.A.W. Unfortunately today the work of the Prophet S.A.W. has been forgotten almost by all Muslims. Consequently the ‘iman’ of almost all Muslims women and men are weak. Muslims generally are not able to obey all the orders of Allah. As a result, Muslim couples normally resort to divorce as to resolve their marriage problems. As many Muslim women are able to earn a living, and coupled with the factor of weak ‘iman’, the number of divorce cases among Muslims is on the increase.

One other bad habit that many of us have particularly towards our spouse is to have bad thought of each other. We nurture those bad thoughts without disclosing it to our partner. Allah forbids us from nurturing bad thoughts towards our spouse and the moment we have bad thoughts towards each other, we must clarify those thoughts by confronting our partners and having an open discussion with him or her. If our husband has an affair, discuss with him openly. If he needs to have another wife, let him marry her. Oblige him to sign a written document, witnessed by a lawyer, that he will be just and fair to both wives. We should not be overly worried about love but we should be concerned with justice and fairness. Love is not within the control of the husband, but to be just and fair is within his choice and ability. We should not feel jealous if our husband loves the other wife more than us. We really do not need the love of the creations but what we really need is the love of Allah. Whether our husband loves us or not is not important but what is important is the love of Allah. We do not have to demand love from our husband as he cannot give love to us, but we must demand justice and fairness as he is capable of doing what Allah has ordered him to do. When our husband cannot do justice, then to marry one is better for our husband as Allah has mentioned in the Quran. Many a times when a husband intends to take another wife, his wife becomes very sad and start to ask for a divorce from him. This is not the best solution as it will lead to more problems. Allah does not favour a wife who asks for a divorce from her husband without any valid reason. Allah has allowed a man to marry more than one wife. Hence to ask for a divorce simply because the husband wants to marry another wife is invalid in Islam. Women cannot go against the law of Allah and they should not fight for polygamy to be abolished. Instead they must fight for justice in polygamy. Divorce for valid reasons is allowed in Islam but it is hated by Allah.

The story of a beautiful woman-”Just go, there is nothing wrong with this marriage”

Just go, there is nothing wrong with this marriage
There was this beautiful woman, who wanted to get married, but she wanted a very pious husband, so she said that she’ll marry the man who recites the whole Quran every single day, fasts for the whole year and stays awake and worships Allah all throughout the night.
She was a very beautiful woman, and a lot of suitors wanted to marry her, but they knew they couldn’t fulfil the conditions she set. Until this one man stepped forward and said he could fulfil them. So the Imam got both of them married.
After the first night of the marriage, the wife sees that the husband doesn’t recite the whole of the Quran, nor does he fast, nor does he stay awake in the worship of Allah, she decided to let it roll on for a few weeks to see if there were any changes, there weren’t, so she filed a complaint and asked for a divorce.
They are both taken in front of the judge, and the judge asked, ‘What were the conditions of the marriage?’ the man replied ‘They were for me to recite the whole Quran daily, keep fast for the whole year and to worship Allah all throughout the night.
The Judge asked, ‘ did you fulfil them?
The man calmly answered, ‘…yes.’
The judge answers, ‘you lie, your wife has said that you don’t, that’s why she’s asking for a divorce’.
But the man insisted that he had fulfilled the conditions, so the judge asked, ‘did you recite the full Quran everyday?’
The man answered yes.
The Judge, baffled asked, ‘how? How can you do that?’
The man coolly answered, ‘I recite Surah Ikhlas three times a day and according to Prophet Muhammad (saw), reciting Surah Ikhlas three times is equivalent to reciting the whole Quran.’
[Hadith
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: A man heard another man reciting: Surat-ul-Ikhlas (The Unity) 'Say: He is Allah, the One (112) and he was repeating it. The next morning he came to Allah's Apostle and mentioned the whole story to him as if he regarded the recitation of that Sura as insufficient On that, Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! That (Sura No. 112) equals one-third of the Qur'an."  Bukhari (Book #78, Hadith #638)]

The Judge was intrigued, so he asked, ‘how did you fast the whole year?
The man answered,
‘ I fasted for the whole month of Ramadan, then kept another six fasts in the month of Shawwal, according to Prophet Muhammad (saw), keeping all of the fast of Ramadan then keeping six fasts in the month of Shawwal, is as if you have fasted for the whole year.’
Hadith

[Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal. it would be as if he fasted perpetually.]Hadith 2614-Sahih Muslim

The Judge remained silent, he couldn’t give a reply saying the man was wrong, so finally he asked, ‘ how did you stay awake all night and worship Allah, when your wife saw you sleeping?’
The Judge thought the man wouldn’t be able to answer this one, but the man, cool as a cucumber answered,
‘I prayed Salatul Isha with jamaat, then the next day prayed Salatul Fajr with jamaat, according to Prophet Muhammad (saw), the one who prays Salatul Isha and Salatul Fajr with jamaat, it is as if he had stayed up all night worshipping Allah.’
[Hadith: Uthman bin `Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying: "One who performs `Isha' prayer in congregation, is as if he has performed Salat for half of the night. And one who performs the Fajr prayer in congregation, is as if he has performed Salat the whole night.''
[Muslim]
The narration of At-Tirmidhi says: `Uthman bin Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he had heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying: “He who attends `Isha’ in congregation, is as if he has performed Salat for half of the night; and he who attends `Isha’ and Fajr prayers in congregation, is as if he has performed Salat for the whole night.”
Commentary: This Hadith tells us that the reward of performing `Isha’ and Fajr prayers in congregation is so great that it equals the worship of the whole night.]
The Judge sat there looking at the man; the final verdict was about to be released…
He said to the man and his wife, ‘…go, just go, there is nothing wrong with this marriage’…

A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE STORY…

JEDDAH — The love between an Islamic preacher with special needs and a Holy Qur’an teacher has turned into marriage.
The touching story began when Abdullah Banimah, who is completely paralyzed appeared on a satellite television program talking about spreading the message of Islam in several countries in the world.
When his future wife saw the program she immediately told her father about her desire to marry him because she admired him for courageously facing up to his disability and for dedicating his life to Islamic preaching.
Their dream turned true Tuesday when their friends queued along the road leading to the Al-Salam Wedding Hall in Jeddah to wish the couple a happy married life.

Abdullah had almost drowned in a swimming pool at a sports club in Jeddah. He had remained underwater for 15 minutes. This caused a great deal of damage to his brain which resulted in his paralysis.
The incident made him change his life completely by dedicating it to Islamic work.
Dhaiffallah bin Saad Al-Ghamadi, the bride’s father, said: “My daughter, who works as teacher for one of the Holy Qur’an memorization schools in Jeddah, chose Abdullah on her own. After insisting she wanted to get married to him, I bowed to her will.”
Dhaifallah said the reason for marrying Abdullah is for them to work hand-in-hand in the way of Allah.
Omar Banamh, the groom’s father, said: “I have nothing to say but to pray to Allah to crown this marriage by blessing them with pious offspring.”
He said he hoped Abdullah will see his children grow up with no disability.
Abdullah was ecstatic about his marriage.
“In the beginning I could not believe this was her desire. She really surprised me. I will never ever forget her noble stand and insistence on accepting me as her husband. I pray to Allah day and night to enable me to make her happy for the rest of my life.”
He said he will never forget, for the rest of his days, the many people who had gathered to wish him a happy marriage.”

Who is to hold authority at home?

written by Amr Khaled

Love, clashes, rights, and duties; all are nouns to describe the first year of marriage. What is the role of the husband? What is the role of the wife? What are the rulings of marriage in the Islamic Law?

Those rulings that proved to fit all places, ages, and all the social systems. This is the core of the interview that Essam Ghazi made with Mr. Amr Khaled for Kol el-nas, Wednesday 24/9/2003 issue.

Here you are the details of the interview:

In the first year of marriage, clashes arise between couples due to the differences in cultures and environments. Clashes, normally, revolve around holding authority at home, while each of them is trying to gain more independence. Mr. Amr Khaled highlights the justice of Islam in dividing the rights between the husband and the wife. Only if each one knew his rights as well as the rights of his mate, clashes would come to an end and the first year of marriage would turn to an everlasting honeymoon. If you want to know what Mr. Amr Khaled said about this issue, continue reading.

The essence of the problem

I asked him, “Mr. Amr, tell us please about the husband's rights and the wife's rights that are required for a comfortable marital life.”

When talking about rights we have to talk about roles. Each one should know well his role. Problems often arise because each one does not know his role.

So, is the husband's role merely reduced to bread winning? And is the wife's role merely reduced to enjoying her time in clubs and going on trips, ignoring completely the demands of her family and her house?

Actually, the major problem faced by all families all over the world is defining the roles of both the husband and the wife. Normally, all the world social systems had different opinions about this.

For example, in Russia and Eastern Europe, communism saw that the most important of all is the society. Men and women are only the children-producers in it. They have no other role. The country is the one that raises those children instead of the parents. In this case, the country that raises, educates, and spends money has replaced the parents’ role. Consequently, those children will grow up having a great sense of belonging towards their country.

Don't forget that Israel, though a non-communist society, follows the same route in the Mushaf and the Kepots. The result of canceling the roles of the parents was the great and sudden collapse of the Soviet Union, or, you can say, the communist society as a whole.

Yet, the whole society was reformed when the parents' roles were back; that society which was once destroyed in 70 years because of canceling the parents' roles.

Another example is the western society; a materialistic one. There, the dollar or the Euro is the only thing that counts. Those who have no money are trampled underfoot. The first priority for parents is going to work, whereas bringing up their children in a warm family atmosphere comes secondly. Number one is work… work… work. Actually, I'm not against women's work, I'm just talking about priorities. The woman, there, started to work day and night. She started to replace man in everything. Thus, her femininity diminished.

The right priorities:

Women before Islam and at the beginning of the Islamic Age used to work, yet, they never lost their femininity and their families never dissolved. Why?

It's well known that women used to work and to join in jihad before Islam, after Islam, and at the beginning of the prophecy epoch. However, they never lost their femininity because their priorities were well arranged. The success of any woman depends, greatly, on how she arranges her priorities.

Unacceptable examples:

Consider the Western example. It recognizes the family in a greatly materialistic way. It considers it the second or the third priority (I live in the West and I witnessed this myself). As a result, a girl until the age of 16 is forbidden to have a boyfriend. She can only have a school colleague.

When she is 16, she can have a boyfriend, under the supervision of her family. At 18, she leaves her home and goes to enjoy her life with her boyfriend, but without having babies. This is the normal result of what her society has lodged deep inside her mind and soul; collect money and that's it. At the age of 35, her womanhood drives her to ask for being a respectable wife. She is harshly encountered with the answer, "No, we will live together as partners in the same house." She starts to share responsibilities with the man, and is allowed to bring children, yet, she is never allowed to ask for marriage.

What is the difference, then, between the above-mentioned relation and the legal marriage?

In the above-mentioned relation, the man, not willing to bear the responsibility, might kick her and her children out at any time. Consequently, the concept of the single-mother made its way into the Western societies. The single-mother is the woman, who used to share a house with a man, then she gave birth to children, and they all started to share the house with that stranger who is never related to them by any means. As a result, at the age of 45, she starts to suffer from depression and destruction. She can no longer play the role of a girlfriend, nor is she a mother, a grandmother, or even a wife. She has been moving in a blind alley and now she reached its end.

After considering the Communist and the Western examples, let's consider the Islamic one.

I need love, tenderness, and compassion:

In the Islamic example, the role of man is:
1.      bringing up children
2.      Bread-winning
3.      Showing compassion and tenderness towards the whole family members.

Whereas the woman's priorities are arranged as follows:

   1. Showing compassion and affection towards her husband and her children.
   2. Working, if she would like to.

So, the first duty on the woman's shoulders is showing tenderness and compassion towards her family members. What proves my words is the way Allah created Eve. In Arabic, Eve is called "Hawwa' ". The word "Hawwa' " is derived from the word "ehtewaa' ", an Arabic word that means "encompassment". She encompasses everything not only her husband and her children. That's really her main role. Moreover, Eve was created from Adam's rib. She was not created from dust like him. As if Allah (SWT) is telling Adam that Eve is part of him and so he must care for her. Notice, also, that Eve was created from the ribs of Adam, and as known, the role of the ribs is to protect the heart. Thus, woman is the heart-protector. Imam Ahmad narrates that while in paradise, Adam felt lonely. So, while he was sleeping, Allah created Eve from his ribs. Then, he woke up and saw her. He asked her, "Who are you?"  "A woman", said she. "What's your name?" he returned. "Eve", replied she. "Why were you created?" he asked again. "To be your home", she answered. Thus, she is the home of the world and the relief of the heart. Without her, the whole world turns to wars, destruction, agony, and grief. Try to compare the other examples to Islam and how it treats woman.

A misconception:

One of the most horrible scenes in our life is one where the woman is pictured as a piece of home-furniture. This is wholly untrue. I think we all know quite well Ahmad Shawqi's lines that go:

A mother is a grand school.
Upon whose foundations, you establish entire nations

As if Islam wants to tell the woman, "You are half of the society. You are the one who provides the other half with affection and compassion."  Concerning the anti-woman labor calls, they are never related to Islam. They are, perhaps, a reaction against those imitators of the West who have been recently calling for changing the woman's priorities and putting work at the beginning of her agenda. Keeping women away from work was never a feature of the community established by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) 14 centuries ago. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself agreed that ِAl-Sayeda Rufayda establishes a hospital where she can treat men and women. Moreover, Hassaan Ibn Thabet (RA), the Prophet's poet, praised the working woman in his poetry. Also, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) assigned some roles for women to play in wars, and when a woman told him that she works as a hairdresser for women, he welcomed her and told her that, by so doing, she is helping them to be more cherished by their husbands. Hence, we have the physician and the warrior. Al-Sayeda Aisha herself established a school for teaching men and women, many of whom became scholars later on. We also have many creative women poets. Thus, the main role of the Muslim woman is caring for her husband and children and working if she likes to, provided that she does not lose her femininity.

On the other hand, what is the role of the husband? Is it education then bread winning or bread winning then education?

The role of the husband is firstly, bringing up his children well and secondly, spending money on them. What would be the benefit of money if the son was brought up as a drug addict? The father is number one person in his home, so, where is your education and your compassion? Where are your gatherings with your children? Where is the care that you are supposed to wrap them up with?

The responsibility of the husband only:

A famous scene: the pregnant woman comes exhausted from work to find all kinds of problems waiting for her; house, children, cooking, cleaning, laundry…etc. On the other side of the scene is the husband lying in front of the TV after taking his shower. Some moments later, he goes to bed. Is this justice? This is, absolute injustice. I think that this stems from a major problem; namely, the unwillingness of many husbands to bear responsibilities in the way all men are supposed to do. They mistakenly think that the woman's main role is to clean, cook, and do the laundry. Actually, this is never the woman's status in Islam. Despite the responsibilities of being a Prophet and a leader of an entire nation, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to milk the goat, to sew up his clothes, and to go to the market to do the shopping himself. This is the role of the man as depicted by the Prophet (PBUH). Al-Sayeda Aisha says, "The Prophet (PBUH) used to sit with us to talk and chat, yet, when he hears the Azan he appears as if he does not know us." What do you think they used to chat about? Only religion? Actually, no; they used to talk about the society, about poetry...etc. They even used to go out and hold competitions.

Is it the right of the husband to take his wife's salary every month?

Islam has completely separated the wife's wealth from that of her husband's. Thus, in Islam, women are free to do whatever they like with their money. Also, in Islam, women are called after their fathers, contrary to the West where they are called after their husbands.
