Wonders of Love

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."

" Is the man of the house in home ?" they asked .

" No ", she replied . " He's out ."

"Then we cannot come in", they replied .

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened

he said: " Go tell them I am in home and invite them in ."

The woman went out and invited the men in .

" We do not go into a House together !" they replied .

"Why is that ?" she asked .

One of the old men explained : "His name is Wealth ," he said as pointing to one of his friends, and said, pointing to another one , "He is Success, and I am Love ." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home ."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed . " How nice !" he said . " Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth . Let him come and fill our home with wealth !"

His wife disagreed . " My dear, why don't we invite Success ?"

Their daughterinlaw was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion : " Would it not be better to invite Love ? Our home will then be filled with love ."

"Let us heed/follow our daughterinlaw' s advice," said the husband to his wife !

"Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the three old men , "Which one of you is Love ? Please come in and be our guest ."

Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success : "I only invited Love ; Why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together : "If you had invited Wealth or Success , the other two of us would've stayed out, but since you invited Love , wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also

Wealth and Success."

Hurt by Others: How to Cope and Heal

When I was growing up, the world was a perfect place. The only problem was, that it wasn’t. I used to believe that everything could always be ‘fair’. To me that meant no one should ever be wronged, and if they were, justice must be served. I fought hard for the way I believed things should be. But in my struggle, I overlooked a fundamental truth about this life. In my childish idealism, I failed to understand that this world is inherently imperfect. We, as humans, are inherently imperfect. So we will always mess up. And in those mess-ups, we will inevitably hurt others, knowingly, and unknowingly, intentionally and unintentionally. The world would not always be fair.
Does that mean we stop struggling against injustice, or give up on Truth? Of course not. But it means we must not hold this world – and others – to an unrealistic standard. But that’s not always easy. How do we live in a world so flawed, where people let us down, and even our own family can break our heart? And perhaps, hardest of all, how do we learn to forgive when we have been wronged? How do we become strong, without being hard, and remain soft, without being weak? When do we hold on, and when can we let go? When does caring too much, become too much? And is there such a thing as loving more than we should?
To begin to find these answers, we have to first take a step outside our own lives. We need to examine whether we are the first or the last to feel pain or be wronged. We need to look at those who came before us, to study their struggles, and their triumphs. And we need to recognize that growth never comes without pain, and success is only a product of struggle. That struggle almost always includes withstanding and overcoming the harms inflicted by others.
Recalling the shining examples of our prophets will remind us that our pain is not isolated. Remember that Prophet Nuh was abused by his people for 950 years. The Quran tells us: “Before them the People of Noah rejected (their apostle): they rejected Our servant, and said, ‘Here is one possessed!’, and he was driven out.” (Qur’an, 54:9) Nuh was abused so much that he finally “called on his Lord: ‘I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)!’” (Qur’an, 54:10)
Or we can call to mind how the Prophet ﷺ was pelted with stones, until he bled, and how the companions were beaten and starved. All of this harm was at the hands of others. Even the angels understood this aspect of human nature – before we even came to be. When Allah told the angels that He would create humanity, their first question was about this harmful potential of humans. Allah tells us: “Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: ‘I will create a vicegerent (humanity) on earth.’ They said: ‘Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?’” (Qur’an, 2:30)
This potential of humanity to commit horrific crimes against each other is a sad reality of this life. And yet many of us are so blessed. Most of us have not had to face the type of calamities that others have endured throughout time. Most of us will never have to watch as our families are tortured or killed. And yet, there are few of us who could say we have never been hurt, in one way or another, at the hands of someone else. So although most of us will never have to know the feeling of starving to death or standing helpless as our homes are destroyed, most of us will know what it means to cry from a wounded heart.
Is it possible to avoid this? To some degree, I think it is. We can never avoid all pain, but by adjusting our expectation, our response, and our focus, we can avoid much devastation. For example, putting our entire trust, reliance, and hope in another person is unrealistic and just plain foolish. We have to remember that humans are fallible and therefore, our ultimate trust, reliance, and hope should only be put in Allah. Allah says: “…whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing of all things.” (Qur’an, 2: 256) Knowing that Allah is the only handhold that never breaks, will save us from much unneeded disappointment.
And yet this is not to say that we should not love or that we should love less. It is how we love that is important. Nothing should be our ultimate object of love, except Allah. Nothing should come before Allah in our hearts. And we should never come to a point where we love something, other than Allah, in such a way, that it would be impossible to continue life without it. This type of ‘love’ is not love, but actually worship and it causes nothing but pain.
But what happens when we’ve done all that and still we have been hurt or wronged by others – as will also inevitably happen? How can we do what is the hardest? How can we learn to forgive? How can we learn to mend our scars and continue being good to people, even when they are not good to us?
In the story of Abu Bakr radi Allahu `anhu (may Allah be pleased with him), is a beautiful example of exactly that. After his daughter, `Ayesha (r), was slandered in the worst way, Abu Bakr (r) found out that the man who began the rumor was Mistah, a cousin who Abu Bakr had been supporting financially. Naturally Abu Bakr withheld the charity he had been giving the slanderer. Soon after, Allah revealed the following ayah: “Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want and those who migrated in the path of Allah. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Indeed Allah is oft-Forgiving, most Merciful.” (Qur’an, 24:22) Upon hearing this ayah, Abu Bakr resolved that he did want Allah’s forgiveness, and so he not only continued to give the man money, he gave him more.
This type of forgiveness is at the very heart of being a believer. In describing these believers, Allah says: “And who shun the more heinous sins and abominations; and who, whenever they are moved to anger, readily forgive.” (Qur’an, 42:37)
The ability to readily forgive should be driven by an awareness of our own flaws and mistakes towards others. But most of all, our humility should be driven by the fact that we wrong Allah every single day of our lives, when we sin. Who are we compared to Allah? And yet, Allah, Master of the universe, forgives by day and by night. Who are we to withhold forgiveness? If we hope to be forgiven by Allah, how can we not forgive others? It is for this reason that the Prophet ﷺ teaches us: “Those who show no mercy to others will have no mercy shown to them by Allah.” [Muslim]
This hope for Allah’s mercy should motivate our own desire to forgive and to one day enter the only world that really is perfect.

Reciting and Teaching the Qur’an Majeed

491.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He who recites the Qur'an well and clearly is equal in rank to the Angels who record creation's deeds. These Angels are gracious, honourable and of lofty rank. He who finds difficulty in reciting the Qur'an will obtain a double reward."
(Bukhari, Muslim).

(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

492.A person whose breast is devoid of the Qur'an (i.e. has not learnt anything of the Qur'an Majeed) is like a desolate house.
(Tirmidhi).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen.
by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

493.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person who recites one harf (letter) of the Qur'an, obtains one virtue; each virtue multiplies to ten virtues. I am not saying that (ALM) is one harf. But, Alif in it is one harf; the Laam in it is one harf and the Meem in it is one harf."
(Tirmidhi, Darimi).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

494.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "On the day of Qiyaamah a crown of such brilliance will be placed on the heads of the parents of one who learnt the Qur'an and practised on its laws, that its glitter will outshine the brilliance of the sun which penetrates your houses. What then do you think will be the position of the one who himself learnt the Qur'an and acted in accordance with it?"
(Ahmad, Abu Dawud).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

495.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He who recites the Qur'an, memorizes it,accepts its halal (lawful things) as halal and haram (forbidden things) as haram (i.e. his beliefs in these matters are correct), Allah Ta'ala will enter him to Jannat and accept his intercession on behalf of ten such persons of his family upon whom entry into Janhannum has become incumbent (i.e. Allah Ta'ala will forgive them because of his intercession)."
(Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Darimi).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

496.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Continue reciting the Qur'an because on the Day of Qiyaamah it will appear as an intercessor for the reciter."
(Muslim).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

497.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He who listens to even a single aayat (being recited by another) obtains such a virtue which perpetually multiplies (it increases in sawaab continuously). The one who recited the aayat will on the Day of Qiyaamah find the recited aayat in the form of a Noor (which will be of greater value and significance than the virtue which accrued to the one who had listened to the recitation)."
(Ahmad).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

498.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
(Bukhari).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

499.Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Qiyaamah the Qur'an will petition Allah to cloak the one who had recited it with garments of honour and respect. A crown of honour will then be placed on the head of the reciter. The Qur'an will then petition Allah Ta'ala to shower His pleasure on the reciter. Allah will then become pleased with him. The reciter will then be asked to recite the Qur'an, thereby attaining higher ranks of elevation. In reward for each aayat a virtue will accrue to him."
(Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaimah).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

500.Continue climbing (higher and higher in rank) with your recitation in the same way as you recited with care and concern on earth. Your abode (of residing) is located (at that rank attained) with the last aayat recited.
(Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Ibn Habbaan).
(Hayaat-ul-Muslimeen. by Mohammad Ashraf Ali Thanvi).

Three Best Friends

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, no one is a (perfect) believer until he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he wishes for himself.” [Bukhari]

There once lived three men who were the very best of friends for the pleasure of Allah. One of the friends, Waqidi, related:

“I had two friends, a Hashimite and a non-Hashimite, and we were very close to each other, like three inseparable companions. I did not have much money and when the day of Eid approached, my wife said to me, ‘We can be patient at all times, but I cannot bear to see my children weeping and crying. I feel as though my heart would break, when I see them in rags, while other children are buying new clothes and other fine things for Eid. If you could get me some money for Eid, I would sew new clothes for them.’

“I then wrote a letter to my Hashimite friend and told him my sad story. He sent me a sealed bag with one thousand Dirhams and an important note. This note explained that I could use this money as I wished.

“No sooner had I thought of how to use the money when I received a note from my other friend, the non-Hashimite. In this note my friend told me his story. He also desperately needed money. And so I sent that same bag of money to him. I then went home and told my wife what I had done with the money. She was very happy that I had helped a friend in need. Alhamdulillah!

“As we sat talking to each other, my Hashimite friend came with the same bag that he had sent me three days ago. He said, ‘Tell me the truth about this bag of money. How has it reached me again?’ I then explained to him how I had sent it to our non-Hashimite friend.

“He then said, ‘When I received your note I had nothing with me except this bag, which I sent to you. But then I wrote to our non-Hashimite friend and asked him for help. I was surprised when he sent me my own sealed bag, which I had sent you. Now have I solved the mystery of the sealed bag!’”

Read Prophet Muhammad's letters that he sent to various rulers...

 Assalamu-Alaikum and Greetings !

Letters sent by the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) to kings and rulers inviting them to Islam

We learn from Sahih Bukhari that late in the six year A.H., on his return from Hudaibiyah, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s.), decided to send messages to the kings and rulers beyond Arabia calling them to Islam. In order to authenticate the credentials of his envoys, a silver seal was made in which were graven the words: “Muhammad the Messenger of Allâh”

Below, you will find two posts with the contents of those letters. The first letter was send to Negus (also referred to as Najashi), while the second post is about the letter that he sent to Cyrus Al-Muqawqas (the Coptic Vicegerent in Egypt). The posts also include the response sent by those rulers to the prophet (s.a.w.s.).

Valuable is Covered

Aisha (radi Allahu anha) narrated: “Asma (radi Allahu anha) came to see the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). She was wearing a thin dress. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) turned away from her and said, ‘O Asma, once a woman reaches the age of puberty no part of her body should be uncovered except her face and hands.’” [Abu Dawud]

Once Muhammad Ali's daughters came to visit him wearing clothes that were not modest. His daughter narrates:

“When we finally arrived, the chauffeur escorted my younger sister, Laila, and me up to my father's suite. As usual, he was hiding behind the door waiting to scare us. We exchanged as many hugs and kisses as we possibly could in one day.

“My father took a good look at us. Then he sat me down on his lap and said something that I will never forget. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to. Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered and protected. Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell. Where do you find gold? Way down in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock. You've got to work hard to get to them.’

“He looked at me with serious eyes. ‘Your body is sacred. You're far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too.’” [More Than a Hero: Muhammad Ali's Life Lessons Presented Through His Daughter's Eyes]

Niqab Ban in the University of Moratuwa: A Victim Student Tells Her Story

by Fathima Sahar

My name is Fathima Sahar, a first year student at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Moratuwa. I am one of three students who are affected by the ban on the niqab by the University. I thought of writing this because our side of story has been literally ‘veiled’ away from the public. The media that reported the issue only spoke to the University authorities and did not contact us. The University too, that is so eager to see our faces did not want to hear our voices, ideas and thoughts. Before they decided to ban the niqab – the University did not trouble itself to give us a hearing, to discuss, to find a solution to whatever problem they perceived.

In that sense, the way we have been treated is no different to the way many of our sisters in many other contexts are treated. Women and their voices are hardly allowed to be heard but kept muted and suppressed. And in that sense at least, I feel it is my duty to speak up and speak out.

I was born in a refugee camp. My parents are from Mannar and were victims of the ethnic cleansing of the Northern Muslims by the LTTE in 1990. Like most refugee students I saw a University education as a passport to a better future and a means for empowerment to fight against the type of injustices that my parents suffered. So my journey from Puttalam to Moratuwa was hard and difficult yet it was inspired by the hope of something better.

The niqab was never an issue for the University of Moratuwa. I was not the first student to wear it. A few years ago the University had its first niqabi enrol and complete her studies and graduate – without hindrance. One other student who is affected by this decision started wearing it in September 2011. She has been banned from wearing the niqab after two years of wearing it – without a problem. Why is this happening now? Did something happen? Or is this a reflection of the changed socio-political context in which Muslims live? Is this a reflection on the diminishing scope of our rights?

When I entered the University of Moratuwa I truly felt proud and happy to be in a place of diverse cultures and identities and yet free to be who we are. This is I thought was what a university experience was all about.

In March 2013 the Bodu Bala Sena announced the end of its campaign against the ‘Halaal logo’. It was at that time that it also announced the start of a new campaign. This time it was going to be a campaign against the attire of Muslim women – the hijab and the niqab. The niqab which for several years had been a non-issue at the University of Moratuwa became an issue for the first time in July 2013.

I was pulled up by a professor during a lecture where he scolded me and told me I cannot wear the niqab as it was contrary to the ‘discipline’ of the University. But in July 2013 I did not want the attention and I really needed to get my degree. So I co-operated. I removed my niqab during lectures and in any case at security points I was already removing my niqab and identifying myself to the female security officers there before entry into the university.

On August 01, 2013, when I tried to enter the University I was stopped at the gate by the Security Personnel who stated that the Vice Chancellor has ordered them to not to allow me inside. So it was not I who made the request to be permitted to wear the niqab – but it was the Vice Chancellor and the University authorities who stopped me. To the media it was stated that I made the request – which is not correct. What more I have not ‘accepted’ the decision – which is also what was incorrectly told to the press.

Having been stopped at the gate on August 01, 2013 and after discussing with my colleagues etc I lodged a formal appeal to the Vice Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor by letter dated October 11, 2013 informed me that the matter is to be decided by the Senate and the Board of Residence and Discipline and that I will be informed of their decision. Until such time he stated in his letter that I will be permitted to attend University. I was thrilled. Looking back I feel it was just a game to brush the issue under the carpet – at least until the CHOGM was over.

However despite the Vice Chancellor’s letter the security refused entry as they had not been independently informed. So I awaited a response from the University. Although I heard that a decision had been made – I received no formal intimation. So I went to the University on November 24th, 2013. Again I was stopped at the gate. Only then was I informed that the Senate has decided to ban the niqab. On my request a copy of the letter that was supposed to have been sent to me was despatched and I received that letter on December 04th, 2013.

The reason they have stated in the decision is one of security although initially it was framed as being a matter of discipline and ‘dress code’. Banning the niqab has certainly not made the University of Moratuwa – any safer than it was. In fact now it has become a place of oppression and suppression. The security reasons are not genuine and they don’t make sense at all. Our universities have seen a lot of violence – in that backdrop – three girls in a niqab in such a large university is hardly a security concern.

The letter says that ‘students are required to keep their faces open while being in the premises’. Why? Is the University watching us all the time? I am willing to show my face for security, at examinations but during other times am I not entitled to decide how much of myself I show and share with the rest?

There is an important debate going on – all over the world – about women and their attire and how they identify themselves. A recent survey has revealed that ‘Three quarters of girls and young women aged 11 to 21 said sexism affects most areas of their lives, with many subject to sexual taunting or being at the receiving end of sexist jokes at school, while nine in 10 think women are judged more for their looks than their ability’.

My attire offers an alternative – an alternative that demands that I be judged for who I am than for how I look. The University and its Senate may not agree with this. But certainly I am ready for the debate but the Senate has run-away from it and banned the niqab altogether – even without a proper hearing. Certainly that is not something that a University should do.

Finally I don’t wear the niqab because some dominant male has forced me to. In fact ever since this issue started most of the males in my family and neighbourhood have asked me to give this up for my studies. The niqab is not act of subjugation or subordination. Certainly not for me. It takes a lot of courage to wear it and go out in the world, to deal with the attention and the scorn. But it is that same courage that helps me stand up and assert my rights even against my own University.
