The Importance of Salatul Fajr (The Early Morning Prayer)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever prays the dawn prayer in congregation, it is as if he had prayed the whole night long.” (Muslim, p. 454, no. 656; al-Tirmidhi, 221).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: “The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are salaat al-’isha’ and salaat al-fajr, but if they only knew what they contain, they would come even if they had to crawl.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 2/424; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 133).

Whoever prays fajr is under the protection of Allah. Do not put yourselves in a situation where Allah has to call you to account for your negligence.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani, 7/267; Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 6344).

Angels come to you in shifts by night and by day. They meet at salaat al-fajr and salaat al-‘asr, then those who had stayed with you at night ascend, and are asked by the One Who knows better than they: ‘How did you find My servants?’ They say, ‘We left them when they were praying, and we came to them when they were praying.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 2/33).

According to a saheeh hadeeth: “Whoever prays al-Bardayn will enter Paradise.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 2/52). Al-Bardayn are fajr and ‘asr.

Hadith #1

from the collection of 40 Hadiths by Imam Nawawi

It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu'minin, Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say:

"Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated."

Al-Imam Ahmad said: Before you do anything, check your intention (niyyah) - ask yourself before performing an action: "Is it for the sake of Allah?"

8 Basic Errors Muslims make when Paying Zakat Al-Fitr

By Muhammad Alshareef, compliments of www.HeartWheelJournal.com

I feel compelled to put this together because I’ve seen
the following errors being committed even since I was a
young boy. In sha Allah, you can help me spread the word by
sharing this article with your community, friends and
family.

What is Zakat ul-Fitr? Think “Iftar”, Zakat Ul-Fitr is
the charity that we pay at the end of Ramadan. Here is the
foundational hadith that establishes the obligation of
Zakat ul-Fitr:

Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam), made Zakat al-Fitr compulsory on every slave,
freeman, male, female, young and old among the Muslims; one
Saa` (a measurement: four double handfuls) of dried dates or
one Saa` of barely.
[Sahih Bukhari - Arabic/English, vol. 2, p. 339, no. 579]

To understand Zakat ul-Fitr, here is a good summary of it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zakat_al-fitr

But unfortunately, our community makes some basic errors in
the payment of Zakat Al-Fitr that must be clarified.

Error One: Paying at Eid Salah
Some people go to Eid prayers and drop money into the
donation box thinking that they have paid their Zakat
ul-Fitr. No, Zakat al-Fitr, which is food, must be in the
hands of the needy family BEFORE Eid prayer. If someone
goes to Eid prayer and pays then it is GUARANTEED that the
money will NOT arrive on time. And thus the person paying
is sinful for having missed the payment of Zakat al-Fitr.
May Allah forgive us.

Error Two: Snail mailing the money overseas
Basic principle as before: the Zakat al-Fitr, food, MUST be
in the hands of the needy BEFORE Eid prayer. One cannot mail
the money overseas and have it arrive in the hands of the
needy after Eid prayer is over.

However, if one is able to get the Zakah al-Fitr to the
needy overseas BEFORE Eid prayer is conducted in their
locality, then in sha Allah it’s alright.

Error Three: Not paying
Yes, as simple as this error is, it is HARAM to skip the
payment of Zakat Al-Fitr. EVERYONE must pay Zakat Al-Fitr,
every member of the household. So if you have 8 people in
your house, Zakat Al-Fitr must be paid x 8, even if the
youngest member is just a few days old.

Error Four: Confusing Zakat ul-Fitr with Zakat ul-Maal
We are talking about Zakat al-Fitr here (think “Iftar”,
i.e. Ramadan). Zakat Al-Maal (Maal literally means wealth),
is the Zakah due on ones money – and that could be due
any time during the year depending on when it was due.

Error Five: Giving money instead of food
Although some scholars have allowed giving money instead of
food, the spirit of Zakat Al-Fitr is to give food to the
needy of the community, NOT money.

The Companion of the Prophet, Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree, radi
Allahu 'anhu, said, "In the Prophet's time, we used to give
it (Zakatal-Fitr) as a sa` of food, dried dates, barley,
raisins or dried cheese".
[Bukhari - Arabic/English vol. 2, p. 340, no. 582]

Error Six: Giving one’s Zakah al-Fitr to a charitable
building project
Some people mistakenly give their Zakah Al-Fitr to a
charitable building project: like the building of a Masjid,
or Islamic school. There is a difference of opinion on this
issue, but suffice it to say that the spirit of Zakah
Al-Fitr is that the needy should have plentiful food on
Eid. All eight types of recipients of Zakah mentioned in
the Quran are HUMANS, not “building projects”.

Error Seven: Giving Zakat ul-Fitr to non-Muslims
Charity is given to both Non-Muslims and Muslims. However,
Zakah al-Fitr charity is something exclusive to the MUSLIM
poor and needy. Hence, one could not give Zakah Al-Fitr to
any needy person on the street. “Regular” charity can
be given to them, but not Zakah Al-Fitr.

Error Eight: Delaying distribution
Sometimes Masjids might collect Zakah Al-Fitr money and
then put it in a bank. It doesn’t reach the needy for
months and months. The correct method is to give Zakah
Al-Fitr immediately when it is due.

These are my eight. You are welcome to share other common
errors on my blog. www.DiscoverULife.com/Blog

In sha Allah, if you have Zakah questions, I encourage you
to seek counsel from your local sources of knowledge.
People you can speak to directly.

With best wishes to see you succeed at the highest level!

Hereafter- Shaykh Zakir Naik

[1]. Belief in the hereafter is not based
on blind faith
Many people wonder as to how a person with
a scientific and logical temperament, can
lend any credence to the belief of life after
death. People assume that anyone believing
in the hereafter is doing so on the basis of
blind belief. My belief in the hereafter is
based on a logical argument.
_________________________________
[2]. Hereafter a logical belief
There are more than a thousand verses in
the Glorious Qur’an, containing scientific
facts (refer my book “Qur’an and Modern
Science-Compatible or Incompatible?”).
Many facts mentioned in the Qur’an have
been discovered in the last few centuries. But
science has not advanced to a level where it
can confirm every statement of the Qur’an.
Suppose 80% of all that is mentioned in
the Qur’an has been proved 100% correct.
About the remaining 20%, science makes
no categorical statement, since it has not
advanced to a level, where it can either
prove or disprove these statements. With the
limited knowledge that we have, we cannot
say for sure whether even a single percentage
or a single verse of the Qur’an from this 20%
portion is wrong. Thus when 80% of the
Qur’an is 100% correct and the remaining
20% is not disproved, logic says that even the
20% portion is correct. The existence of the
hereafter, which is mentioned in the Qur’an,
falls in the 20% ambiguous portion which
my logic says is correct.

[3]. Concept of peace and human values
is useless without the concept of hereafter
Is robbing a good or an evil act? A normal
balanced person would say it is evil. How
would a person who does not believe in the
hereafter convince a powerful and influential
criminal that robbing is evil? Suppose I am
the most powerful and influential criminal
in the world. At the same time I am an
Intelligent and a logical person. I say that
robbing is good because it helps me lead a
luxurious life. Thus robbing is good for me.
If anybody can put forward a single logical
argument as to why it is evil for me, I will
stop immediately. People usually put forward
the following arguments:
A). The person who is robbed
will face difficulties
Some may say that the person who is robbed
will face difficulties. I certainly agree that it
is bad for the person who is robbed. But it
is good for me. If I rob a thousand dollars, I
can enjoy a good meal at a 5 star restaurant.
B). Someone may rob you
Some people argue that someday I may be
robbed. No one can rob me because I am a
very powerful criminal and I have hundreds
of bodyguards. I can rob anybody but
nobody can rob me. Robbing may be a risky
profession for a common man but not for an
influential person like me.
C). The police may arrest you
Some may say, if you rob, you can be
arrested by the police. The police cannot
arrest me because I have the police on my
payroll. I have the ministers on my payroll. I
agree that if a common man robs, he will be
arrested and it will be bad for him, but I am
an extraordinarily influential and powerful
criminal. Give me one logical reason why it
is bad for me and I will stop robbing.
D). Its easy money
Some may say its easy money and not hardearned
money. I agree completely that it
is easy money, and that is one of the main
reasons why I rob. If a person has the option
of earning money the easy as well as the hard
way, any logical person would choose the
easy way.
From “Answers to Non-Muslims’ Common Questions about Islam”
How can you prove the existence of hereafter?
Life
Death after
MY Spring 2008 17
E). It is against humanity
Some may say it is against humanity and
that a person should care for other human
beings. I counter argue by asking as to who
wrote this law called ‘humanity’ and why
should I follow it? This law may be good for
the emotional and sentimental people but I
am a logical person and I see no benefit in
caring for other human beings.
F). It is a selfish act
Some may say that robbing is being selfish. It
is true that robbing is a selfish act; but then
why should I not be selfish? It helps me enjoy
life.
_________________________________
[1]. No logical reason for robbing being
an evil act
Hence all arguments that attempt to prove
that robbing is an evil act are futile. These
arguments may satisfy a common man but
not a powerful and influential criminal like
me. None of the arguments can be defended
on the strength of reason and logic. It is no
surprise that there are so many criminals in
this world. Similarly raping, cheating etc.
can be justified as good for a person like me
and there is no logical argument that can
convince me that these things are bad.
_________________________________
[2]. A Muslim can convince a powerful
and influential criminal
Now let us switch sides. Suppose you are
the most powerful and influential criminal
in the world, who has the police and the
ministers on his payroll. You have army of
thugs to protect you. I am a Muslim who will
convince you that robbing, raping, cheating,
etc. are evil acts. Even if I put forth the same
arguments to prove that robbing is evil the
criminal will respond the same way as he
did earlier. I agree that the criminal is being
logical and all his arguments are true only
when he is the most powerful and influential
criminal.
_________________________________
[3]. Every human being wants justice
Each and every human being desires justice.
Even if he does not want justice for others
he wants justice for himself. Some people
are intoxicated by power and influence and
inflict pain and suffering on others. The same
people, however, would surely object if some
injustice was done to them. The reason such
people become insensitive to the suffering
of others is that they worship power and
influence. Power and influence, they feel,
not only allows them to inflict injustice on
others but also prevents others from doing
likewise to them.
_________________________________
[4]. God is Most Powerful and Just
As a Muslim I would convince the criminal
about the existence of Almighty God (refer
to answer proving the existence of God).
This God is more powerful than you and
at the same time is also just. The Glorious
Qur’an says:
“Allah is never unjust in the least degree”
[4:40]
_________________________________
[5]. Why does God not punish me?
The criminal, being a logical and scientific
person, agrees that God exists, after being
presented with scientific facts from the
Qur’an. He may argue as to why God, if He
is Powerful and Just, does not punish him.
_________________________________
[6]. The people who do injustice should
be punished
Every person who has suffered injustice,
irrespective of financial or social status,
almost certainly wants the perpetrator of
injustice to be punished. Every normal
person would like the robber or the rapist to
be taught a lesson. Though a large number of
criminals are punished, many even go scotfree.
They lead a pleasant, luxurious life, and
even enjoy a peaceful existence. If injustice is
done to a powerful and influential person, by
someone more powerful and more influential
than he, even such a person would want that
perpetrator of injustice to be punished.
_________________________________
[7]. This life is a test for the hereafter
This life is a test for the hereafter. The
Glorious Qur’an says:
“He who created Death and life that He may
try which of you is best in deed; and He is
the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving”
[67:2]
_________________________________
[8]. Final justice on day of judgement
The Glorious Qur’an says:
“Every soul shall have a taste of death: and
only on the Day of Judgement shall you be
paid your full recompense. Only he who is
saved far from the Fire and admitted to the
Garden will have attained the object (of life):
for the life of this world is but goods and
chattels of deception.”
[3:185]
Final justice will be meted out on the Day of
Judgement. After a person dies, he will be
resurrected on the Day of Judgement along
with the rest of mankind. It is possible that a
person receives part of his punishment in this
world. The final reward and punishment will
only be in the hereafter. God Almighty may
not punish a robber or a rapist in this world
but he will surely be held accountable on the
Day of Judgement and will be punished in
the hereafter i.e. life after death.

[9]. What punishment can the human
law give Hitler?
Hitler incinerated six million Jews during his
reign of terror. Even if the police had arrested
him, what punishment can the human law
give Hitler for justice to prevail? The most
they can do is to send Hitler to the gas
chamber. But that will only be punishment
for the killing of one Jew. What about the
remaining five million, nine hundred and
ninety nine thousand, nine hundred and
ninety-nine Jews?
_________________________________
[10]. Allah can burn Hitler more than
six million times in hellfire
Allah say in the Glorious Qur’an: “Those
who reject Our signs, We shall soon cast into
the Fire; as often as their skins are roasted
through, We shall change them for fresh
skins, that they may taste the penalty: for
Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise”
[4:56]
If Allah wishes he can incinerate Hitler six
million times in the hereafter in the hellfire.
_________________________________
[11]. No concept of human values
or good and bad without concept of
hereafter
It is clear that without convincing a person
about the hereafter, i.e. life after death, the
concept of human values and the good or
evil nature of acts is impossible to prove to
any.

MUSLIM SALAD
By: Aaron Haroon Sellars © 2007

Before Islam I was lost
And after Islam I was lost
Between this and that group
Was I tossed

A bookstore Shaykh
Not even worth a dollar
With do-it-yourself Islam
Who needs a scholar?

Tossed so much
Might as well been a salad
I was quoting Hadeeth
But my wudu was invalid

If I can’t purify my outer
Then what about my inner?
Piles of books
But still a big sinner

What I know, doesn’t show
And now I know better
That’s what happens without the spirit
And only the letter

So attach myself I must
To scholars with unbroken chains
For this is the means
By which pure knowledge remains

LIKE A BUTTERFLY

By: Aaron Haroon Sellars © 2007

The capital of life
Is in every breathe
So take advantage
Before none is left
Don’t judge the truth
By what people do
First find the truth
And do what’s right for you
Lift your soul up high
From the fakeness on the ground
Search deep inside
And the Real will be found

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

You can’t see the sun
If you look it in the eye
You can’t live your life
If you never try
If you want to walk on water
You must take a step
But you won’t move a foot
With a faith that is inept
So if you want to move the mountains
You need a power not your own
You can move the mountains

When certainty is shown
Don’t you know that the graveyard
Is the richest place on earth?
Because of all the hopes and dreams
That lay beneath the dirt

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

So bless me like Muhammad!
Help me like Moses!
Save me like Jesus!
And all the Saints that know this!

January 13th 1990

At fifteen I was ecstatic to turn sixteen, and at sixteen I waited anxiously for the minute hand to strike twelve so I can announce to the world that I was no longer a child…
but only a year away from being legalized lol
A year has passed and my long wait for eighteen ends today.
Eighteen really doesn’t feel any different. To tell you the truth, when January came around I kinda dreaded turning the big 1-8. It’s like…a whole new number!
Man, I JUST got used to seventeen…
and honestly, I don’t feel ready for all the responsibilities eighteen carries. It’s like…now I’m expected to do so many things on my own cause today I’m an adult.
Hold up, does this mean I was a child yesterday? This transition from a girl to a mature woman over night really ain’t workin for me, dog. I need more time! lol

In the midst of people surrounding me and wishin me a good year and a happy birthday, I couldn’t help but feel discontented. I thought eighteen would satisfy my need for satisfaction. but I really don’t find anything magical about it.
I mean…it’s just a number, right?
I dunno... I just thought eighteen would be different. but it ain’t nothin more than just another yesterday. *sigh*
This dude in my social class asked if I was going to party it up and have some drinks since I’m legal and whatnot. I just laughed and pointed at my hijab and he got the drift.lol.
Four years ago, when my eldest brother turned eighteen, I promised myself to so many commitments by the time my day came around. Today is here and those commitments have been broken.
All but one…
I already miss seventeen and it’s only been a day or rather a few hours. I feel like I’m too young to be yearning for my past and yet it’s that very feeling that makes me feel… old.

My family has never been big on birthdays… so birthday wishes don't mean a thing up in this house lol.

but this morning, my 5 yr old brother and 7 yr old sister woke me up at 7:30am (on a weekend!) to wish me a happy birthday. that was too cute lol. No one ever remembers birthdays in this house..(cept me and the kids lol). My older brothers completely forgot it was my 18th…actually, my bad. one of them did wish me a happy birthday. but I'm pretty sure he remembered thanks to the "facebook birthday reminders" lol. gotta love facebook.
i never remind people of my birthday, I usually tell them the day of ... or the day after lol. I try not to make a big deal about it ...although i do find it to be a big deal =\

maybe nineteen will be different...
if i live to see that day. (insha'Allah!)
and god willing I’ll have many more years to come

enough talk. I should probably go study for those dang diplomas.
